Philip Glass' opera from explores the life of scientist Johannes Kepler through a series of dramatic scenes. Kepler hearkens back to Glass' portrait operas and continues the composer's interest in scientists after operas on Einstein and Galileo. The opera premiered at the Landestheater Linz in 2009 with the Bruckner Orchester Linz under Dennis Russell Davies. Kepler is a refreshing return to large-scale symphonic writing for the opera house. It's a musical dedication to the life of this great scientist - triumphs and human flaws. As Glass states: "I'm interested in the scientist as the dreamer..the scientist as the poet.Kepler was a man with his feet in the mud and his head in the clouds."
