Leonard Feather was the producer of the two unusual and highly regarded Metro Jazz albums compiled in this CD. They were recorded in New York in 1958, and represent a two-way meeting as protracted in the planning as they were successful in the studio. The Mitchell brothers: Whitey (bass) and Red (bass & piano), and trumpeter Blue Mitchell, are featured on the first date, along with Andr Previn, who, as part of his trio, brought the California-based Red temporarily back to New York. Trombonist Frank Rehak and baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams contributed greatly with their solos. Looking back on the second date, Feather remembered that ''It took a long time to corral all the Jones brothers: Thad Jones, Hank Jones, Elvin Jones, along with bassist Eddie Jones, in a recording studio at one time. The overall feeling of this session was that of a long-delayed and very welcome family reunion in which three major musical talents were able to demonstrate a natural and understandable affinity.''
